GLP-1 Drugs May Increase the Risk of Significant Nutritional Deficiencies

GLP-1 medications such as Wegovy, Ozempic, and Mounjaro support weight loss and reduce appetite. A new study published in Clinical Obesity and covered by Harvard Health Publishing suggests that the use of these medications may also increase the risk of important nutritional deficiencies.

The review examined six studies involving over 480,000 adults with diabetes, obesity, or both, who were treated with GLP-1 drugs. The findings showed that the most common deficiency was vitamin D, with increased deficiency rates observed after 6 and 12 months of treatment. In addition, deficiencies in iron, vitamin B, and protein were also reported.

In one of the studies, GLP-1 users were found to consume less than the recommended amounts of energy, calcium, iron, and vitamin D, and many did not take dietary supplements adequately.

Researchers note that the reduced appetite and lower food intake during treatment may explain part of these deficiencies.

These findings highlight the importance of nutritional guidance during GLP-1 treatment, including monitoring nutritional status, adjusting the individual diet, and using dietary supplements when necessary
