EU’s PPWR Regulation: Ambitious Beverage Recycling Targets

Regulation

The EU’s Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR) requires that starting in 2030, most packaging and bottling service providers for food and beverage products in the European Union will be required to ensure that at least 10% of the packaging they produce is reusable.

This target is already raising concerns among beverage industry players. For producers, the regulation means they will need to significantly increase the collection of empty bottles and decide whether their chosen reuse system will operate under an “open loop” or a “closed loop” model,  in other words, whether they are allowed to wash and refill bottles from other manufacturers as well.

At the same time, more efficient technologies will be needed for cleaning bottles, removing old labels, and other processes. These complexities are leading beverage producers to act now, both by lobbying for a delay of the deadline and by starting to collaborate with technology providers who can deliver innovative solutions to meet the new requirements.
